Craving Is All in Vain
We should not crave any person or thing, either material or immaterial. Why?
Because if you observe the nature of those external objects that you crave and desire, you will find that they are like bubbles and have no true essence. What is there to crave?
Once you find that external objects have no true existence, look inward to observe your mind, and you will find that it also does not exist.
Each thought that arises in the mind appears real, vivid, true, and solid.
But if you carefully dissect a thought, you will discover its fleeting nature. It is born in this moment and dies in this moment. Its nature is like empty space and cannot be found anywhere.
Since craved objects do not exist, nor does a mind that craves, how could craving possibly arise?
You might wonder, “If craving does not essentially exist, why do I still crave?”
This situation is really very unfortunate.
Due to the obscuration of ignorance, worldly people regard things that do not essentially exist to be real.
This ignorance continually produces attachments, afflictions, and suffering.
In short, this is entirely a matter of being caught in one’s own trap and reaping the fruits of one’s own actions.
Of course, it is not nearly enough just to understand the empty nature of craving—we must also realize it.
Similarly, when a person only theoretically knows how to drive a car but has never actually done it, we cannot say that he or she really knows how to drive.
Buddhism provides many methods to attain realization.
You can use the Middle Way (madhyamaka) methods of reasoning and inquiry, or use the pith instructions of the Great Seal (mahamudra) and Great Perfection (dzogchen) and draw upon the blessings of your teacher to see the nature of mind.
No matter which method you adopt, you must remember that although all phenomena in the ultimate dimension are of the nature of emptiness, you must not become attached even to emptiness.
